Choosing a match of the year puts one in a precarious position, especially if you share it amongst more than just a close circle of friends. If you publish said choice, wether on social media or an article you open yourself up to trolls, uneducated but honest criticism and also legitimate educated criticism. The legitimate criticism is fine, trolling is to be ignored, but it’s the uneducated honest critics that are maddening. People who argue that only certain promotions or only a certain style of pro wrestling can have a MOTY candidate. The most wrong-headed in nature is people who think only wrestlers of a certain gender can have a MOTY candidate. (Yes, there are still those, even in 2015-2016, who think a match involving women cannot be a great match!)
That said we haven’t listed any Mexico based promotions because we honestly didn’t see one that deserved it. This flies in the face of some other folks we respect who have both CMLL’s Atlantis vs La Sombra and CMLL’s Dragon Lee vs Kamaitachi on their lists.
This takes us to the next concern with a list of contenders for MOTY, some matches rely on the build-up to said match, whilst others are legitimately great due to the in-ring work of the single match in question. A great example of that is Sabre Jr. vs Hero, the whole story takes place in the ring (other than Hero damaging his finger in the parking lot earlier in the day. If you want to count that as build-up since it was same-day, I do not). We do not feel that either type necessarily negates it from being a MOTY candidate, as we have many choices from both.
So without further rambling Triple Threat Wrestling podcast presents to you our 2015 Match of the Year Candidates (and honorable mentions…)
Oh! And one more thing! You can find most of these online with a simple Google search. That said we certainly do not condone illegal downloading of pro wrestling matches. Please, please make every attempt to pay for streaming services, especially for the smaller promotions out there. In the long run it helps the wrestlers that go out there and put their body on the line for our entertainment.
