With the news breaking Monday afternoon, confirmed by Bruce Tharpe later that day in a Facebook post, we thought maybe Mr. Corgan isn’t receiving quite enough suggestions. We’ve decided to send him some of ours…
5 things Billy Corgan should do immediately:
- Get a better NWA Archives streaming service up, hire the same folks that do Major League Baseball or Fox Sports streaming…
- Presuming the existing relationship with NJPW is now void under new NWA ownership, get a working relationship with All Japan done as soon as possible. The promotion is on the upswing in Japan and swapping talent instantly gains Corgan’s promotion hipster credibility.
- Do your absolute best to create a working relationships with promotions like CWF Mid-Atlantic, AAW, Glory Pro, WrestleCircus, and ones in the Pacific NW and Canada. PWG, ROH and Evolve won’t go in halfsies with you but it’s possible other companies will at least be willing to co-promote
- Hire Dave Prazak
- Re-instate the traditional NWA in-ring rules
5 things Billy Corgan should NOT do:
- Do not, DO Not, DO NOT hire anyone related to iMPACT or ROH’s production or creative. Nothing any of them do is fresh or worth stealing from…
- Do not, DO Not, DO NOT try to out Sports Entertain the WWE… you will NEVER succeed.
- Do not rush into producing a tv show, the future is online anyway
- Do not promote head to head against local promotions in big cities i.e. AAW in Chicago
- Do not get anxious… there is another pro wrestling boom coming, we are just seeing the early signs in the past three years or so. Prepare, practice and promote.
5 Wrestlers Billy Corgan should build around:
Upside: A future superstar across all demo’s.
Downside: He’s heading to WWE at some point, so it’s a race against time to get yer brand out there and demonstrate to him he should sign w/ you long term w/o losing potential windfalls.
Timothy Thatcher
Upside: A nod to the great history of the NWA and instant indie cred.
Downside: By many accounts Thatcher has a “real job” and doesn’t need the money so appeal to his creative side.
Upside: A very popular indie performer who could bring with him a cadre of young, talented students.
Downside: The front row would need plastic sheeting to protect them from the snot/sweat/spit that comes from Calihan during a match.
Upside: Arguably the most interesting and atypical female wrestler on the indies.
Downside: The temptation to water-down her character to appease mainstream potential advertisers may be too strong.
Upside: Arguably the most charismatic indie wrestler there is today, plus could lead to bringing in Rey Fenix
Downside: Waiting for his LU contract to expire…
*If the reporting is correct the contracts of current LU stars restrict them from appearing on any other US television wrestling program. That said, if they are only appearing on Corgan’s newly refurbished NWA streaming service and it’s simply VOD shows, at least for the first year or so, they should be safe.
